Location

Greenhouse is an award-winning restaurant presided over by the historical Cellars-Hohenort hotel (a McGrath Collection property) which rests majestically on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain in the glamorous suburb of Constantia. Located in a grand Cape-Dutch style manor house and set within the premises' beautifully garden (home to ancient trees and a vineyard), Greenhouse has remained a revered culinary establishment in South Africa for almost a decade.

Ambience

The modern and stylish interior was designed by local firm, HotCocoa, and sets the mood for a contemporary yet unpretentious dining engagement. Grounded by organic materials like light marble underfoot, leather upholstered chairs and dark wooden tables (without tablecloths), the sophisticated space maintains a natural atmosphere and is adorned with original botanical artworks and wallpaper. As the name suggests, the sleek eatery features a glass conservatory, which illuminates the environment in natural light and allows diners views of the charming greenery beyond.  

Cuisine

In charge of the kitchen team is group executive chef, Peter Tempelhoff, assisted by head chef Ashley Moss. Together they create outstanding original dishes which showcase intricate cooking techniques and a passion for unusual indigenous ingredients. The intriguing elements combined on every plate tell the tale of South African cuisine in a truly avant-garde manner.

Reinterpretations of seemingly familiar flavour combinations seduce the palate, and the clever use of contrasting textures add exciting dynamics to the innovative tasting menu. Furthermore, an outstanding selection of local wines, top notch service as well as exceptional presentation make for an unforgettable meal at Greenhouse.

My thoughts

Cape Town and its surrounding winelands is home to a number of fine dining eateries, but few have perfected this art form to an experience that goes beyond the senses... Greenhouse, however, successfully manages to create a delicate emotive world evoked by their simply fantastic food. Symbolism and storytelling appears to be at the heart of this passionate enterprise - a notion which I find rather endearing, and one that is, evidently, hauntingly delicious...
