New Age Eats: Urbanologi's Asian-inspired "urban garde" cuisine
YUM! As you can see, I savored a mouthwatering meal at Urbanologi, which is positioned at The Sheds, right next to Johannesburg's hip inner city district of Newtown. This new restaurant is interestingly located within the Mad Giant brewery, flaunting an impressive industrial ambience, without losing any warmth or character.
Acclaimed interior and furniture designer, Haldane Martin, is responsible for the concept behind this unique space and its bespoke furnishings. Featuring original green padded leather booths and shiny brushed metal tables, recycled teak herringbone floors, and rounded off by one of a kind "chandeliers" adorning the high ceilings. This 80 year-old former shed has been successfully overhauled into an imaginative and playful dining environment.
In the kitchen, chef Angelo Scirocco (from Test Kitchen & Chef's Warehouse fame) leads the team in creating equally tasteful and refreshingly original dishes inspired by Asian street food. His "urban garde" menu cleverly combines umami (that's Japanese btw) flavours with craft beer, creating a continual culinary metamorphosis between cuisine and brew.
Their fresh, natural ingredients are transformed into beautifully presented small plates that instantly captivate your senses. This promptly provokes a food love affair that is bound to have you coming back for more...
