Menlyn Boutique Hotel: Artistic urban style in SA's capital
Menlyn Boutique Hotel is a distinctive and well appointed 5-star establishment discretely tucked away in Pretoria's upmarket suburb of Ashlea Gardens. The premises, which is in the vicinity of major shopping centres and commercial hubs, is easily accessible yet decidedly private and secure. An inviting atmosphere of exclusivity shrouds the tastefully designed property, where an apparently seamless flow of space connects the interiors with their natural outdoor surroundings.
There are 27 rooms in total and I stayed in the presidential suite, which is situated on the 1st floor of a large contemporary annex. Featuring a double volume pitched roof accentuated by exposed beams, and floor to ceiling windows that illuminate the room with natural light. The large attractive space comprises obvious Scandinavian inspired design themes, with its clean lines, extensive wooden accents and comfortable minimalist decor. Apart from the customary conveniences, my suite also had a computer at the workstation, as well as an iPod preloaded with music - quite a thoughtful touch. I especially liked the modern bathroom with its large walk-in shower, plush bathrobes and range of Charlotte Rhys toiletries.
Despite being a small hotel, the convenience of several onsite leisure facilities like an intimate spa, azure blue swimming pool, expansive al fresco terrace and exercise room is available to all guests. I luxuriated in a relaxing full body massage by an adept therapist - the treatment was also very reasonably priced! Another unique aspect of this property is its detailed sculpture garden. With original artworks displayed around every corner, you can't help but admire this captivating exhibition of local talent.
Undoubtedly, the hotel's pièce de résistance is it's incredible fine dining restaurant, The Black Bamboo. This modish eatery delivers epicurean delights so delectable, even the most sophisticated bon vivant will find them hard to fault. With an innovative menu, superb service and a curated local wine collection, this gourmet's utopia dazzles all the way. Consequentially, the place is routinely packed and reservations should be made in advance. That said, you simply must not miss out on the spectacular culinary magic unfolding here - it truly is the showpiece of Menlyn Boutique Hotel.
In general, the personnel at boutique hotels tend to have quite a personalized approach when it comes to guest interactions, which can be overbearing at times. Nonetheless, the service here is far from intrusive. Given the slight confines of the operation, the well-trained and amicable staff members markedly respect guest's privacy whilst attending to their every requirement. Most notably, the truly world-class level of expertise presented by the skillful waitrons during the dinner service was impeccable!
Traditionally, I'm rather skeptical of "boutique" hotels, as the term is regularly misused to inflate accommodation rates and to forge an impression of exclusivity. However, I'm delighted to verify that Menlyn Boutique Hotel is well-deserved of this label, as it truly is a classy yet humble institution of innate elegance and sincere hospitality. No wonder the capital's business elite and societal who's who are often seen having their important rendezvous here... I don't blame them.
